One needs a strong and ready organization to protect your accomplishments and status earned and achieved from those who would impose their interests to the detriment of you and those you serve.

I encourage my fellow physicians to become members of their appropriate County, State and National societies. There are ever louder calls to limit patients’ access to diagnostic evaluation and treatment. There are ever louder calls to control and diminish physicians’ autonomy and ability to care for patients. Only be uniting can we prevent these ill-conceived financial and regulatory controls from destroying the fabric of American Healthcare.

To physicians contemplating joining MSSNY: Physicians’ roles in the practice of medicine are unique. Physicians are, and must be, members of an integrated team working to provide seamless health care to individual people. Physicians’ training, responsibility, philosophy, and commitment to individual patient care are different from those of the organizations that employ the majority of physicians and from those of the other members of a health care team. Physicians need an organization dedicated to supporting their philosophy of the provision of health care and supporting their interests amid the interests of employers of health care providers and of health care providers who have different training and responsibilities.

I came to Broome County as a physician in July 1983. A phone call came from Dr Kavasseri Agneshwar, president of Broome Medical Society welcoming me to be a part of society.
Joining Local Broome County Medical Society is a pride, privilege, and prestige that allows you to get to know your colleagues in a friendly environment.
I have seen progressive changes over the years. Hospitalists and other fulltime employees of hospitals the memberships to our society, has dwindled.
United we win and divided we lose. Every physician earns enough to contribute for local society’s annual dues and in turn remain connected with changes affecting physicians at local, state, and national level.
The question as an individual physician asked for is “What’s in it for me?” There are just TOO MANY societies created at national level each wanting a chip out of your earnings. I considered it as my duty to be part of physician’s team who will speak out for me in need at state and national level and will bring new changes back to me occurring at higher level.
Online access, zoom meetings have reduced the desire to obtain medical information such as needed for CME in live conference settings.
Merging local counties together can cut down administrative expenses and likewise expensive dinner meetings of society can be tapered.

MSSNY has been instrumental in keeping my practice up to date with changes in regulations, compliance with said regulations, emerging issues, CME and changes with insurers including workers compensation. I appreciate the weekly emails that link me to the resources needed.

Joining Chemung County Medical Society and the New York State Medical Society (MSSNY) provides physicians with diverse advantages and offer a platform for collaboration, education, and advocacy, enriching careers and impacting healthcare. They also support continuing medical education, networking, practice management, and liability coverage.
Networking opportunities: This offers unmatched opportunity to connect with fellow physicians, specialists, and healthcare administrators to expand your medical knowledge and collaborate on projects, research and referrals.
Advocacy: Membership allows to be part of a collective voice in shaping healthcare policies and regulations at the local and state levels. Members contribute collectively to shaping healthcare policies, improving access, quality, and affordability. These efforts encompass reimbursement, regulations, and patient safety, influencing lawmakers at state and federal levels.
Continuing medical education: Stay up-to-date on the latest advancements in your specialty through CME programs. This also helps to meet the requirements for CME.
Professional liability insurance: Receive discounts on products and services, such as malpractice insurance and liability coverage.
Here is a physician’s story (my story) about how they benefited from joining these societies:
“I joined the County Medical Society and the New York State Medical Society early in my career which helped to my career positively. These societies helped me connect with other physicians, learn about new medical advancements, and get involved in advocacy efforts. I also benefited from the CME programs offered by these societies, which helped me stay up-to-date on the latest research and best practices. Overall, this journey demonstrates how membership elevates a physician’s career, offering a collaborative environment, networking, advocacy, and education for better healthcare”.

Recently, when my health was failing and I became burned out from the practice of medicine, I turned to MSSNY for help. They welcomed me with open arms, effectively helped me, and have been kind and supportive since.
The mission and culture of MSSNY is one of support and advocacy to physicians: for residents it offers continuing education, for physicians in practice it offers CME, billing, contract review, legal and organizational assistance. For the medical profession as a whole, MSSNY is active in the legislature, advocating for the profession. It offers a Physician’s Health Division, for those who have psychological and / or substance abuse issues.
I urge: every resident, and every practitioner who wishes to practice in New York State to take a look at MSSNY’s web site, for the variety and extent of benefits that MSSNY offers. I urge them to join MSSNY as soon as possible.
The only regret that I personally have, is not to have joined and participated sooner! My practice would have been easier!

I entered the profession of medicine with high expectations regarding the collegiality of physicians, expectations which were promptly dashed by the reality of the competitive and siloed nature of modern medical practice. Everyone doing their own thing associating exclusively with individuals in the same specialty and working for common overlords or individually, like driven things. An exception can be found in membership in your local medical society: physicians from all specialties, self-employed or employed, not gathering together because the must, to satisfy participation requirements, but because they wish to voluntarily associate with their peers for the good of the profession overall. WOW! What an idea! It’s good, it’s satisfying and it works – Join your local Medical Society today. Anonymous Physician
As a family physician and a public health official I have valued the stands that MSSNY has taken to further the interests of public health, my private practice of medicine and the interests of my patients and community. In this time of misinformation MSSNY is a credible source of accurate information for lawmakers and the public regarding the significant public health threats of our time. Many features of our current healthcare system fail to serve the needs of our society. As a result, our society’s economic vitality is weakened. MSSNY has taken many steps to draw attention to these threats.
I have highly valued MSSNY’s collaboration with the NYS Academy of Family Physicians. On issues they can jointly agree on their combined voice speaks much louder than when alone. Both organizations are evolving to reflect the many and varied clinical and economic roles modern physicians adopt in using their medical education. With the rise of corporate medicine now extending to investments by hedge funds with the intent of reaping great profit the collective voice of physicians dedicated to the good of their patients is more needed than ever.

I joined the Broome County Medical Society and the Medical Society of the State of New York in 1980. I was then in private practice and it was my venue for self-identification to be in a group and society who does represent me and my interest. The Broome County Medical Society then, was crowded with many doctors where their interest was reassured and discussed. Broome County Medical Society is probably the oldest in the country, local doctors were proud to be part of it. Demographics has changed since the 80’s, now many of the doctors are employed by the hospital which affected their loyalty, and the need for any representation. Yet the medical societies are still the only institutions who protect the doctors from the avalanche of federal and state unfair legislations. They are still the only institutions who protect the doctors from medical insurances unreasonable dealings. I’ve been a delegate for Broome County Medical Society to the Medical Society of the State of New York (MSSNY) House of Delegates for more than 20 years now, over all these years the County and State Medical Societies had enacted multiple resolutions which protected doctors and stopped the unfair dealings from federal and state legislative bills and the medical insurances. As a matter of fact, these resolutions have also protected the hospitals as much as protected the members of the Medical Societies.
I wholeheartedly believe the Medical Societies over the years has done a tremendous job in providing me and my colleagues with the protection and the promotions we need. Presently I am the Broome County Medical Society president for the third time, I will always support our missions.
We need to enhance our membership; I am convinced despite being employed by the hospital I still wholeheartedly advocate every provider to join the Medical Society and its mission. We should always be proud there is a society who over the years represented and protected our profession. Please join our mission.
